Improving Google Maps in India is the intention, for which they are requesting your help to provide other users with the most comprehensive, accurate and easy-to-use maps. In return, there are prizes to be won.
The Google Mapathon 2013 competition will run from February 12 to March 25, 2013 and is available for people residing in India only. The top 1000 mappers participating in Mapathon stand a chance to win Android tablets,smartphones, gift vouchers and Google merchandise.
This is a wonderful effort to make Google maps better, especially since local mapping details are particularly lacking in India.

Start using the Google Map Maker to edit Google maps and which allows users to add more details or change wrong information on Google maps.
For example if you’re somewhere in India and see a wrong name, or a road on Google Maps that isn’t there in actuality, you can use the web-based tool to improve Google’s maps. You can also add local information like restaurants, fire stations, petrol pumps, roads, places etc. and save.

One way we hope to achieve this is by mapping the world and what better way to do this than by asking users to map their neighborhood. Google aims to provide better maps for India by building better maps for the users, by the users. What started off as an initiative by a few Google engineers is now used across the world and today, citizens across India can participate in this great project through Mapathon 2013."
So who wins the prizes? Top 1000 contestants with most number of published edits. Simple. Top prizes are 10 Samsung Galaxy Note 800 Android Tablets, 40 Samsung Galaxy SII Android Phones, 50 Flipkart gift coupons worth Rs. 5000 and all 1000 winners get Google Mapathon 2013 t-shirts. Announcement of winners will be made on the contest website around 23rd July 2013. Please note that these dates are subject to change which will be notified on the contest website.
Apart from final set of winners, Google Map Maker Team each week randomly select 50 participants who make at least 10 edits (Total/Approved/Pending or Denied to the Google Maps during the Contest period).
